Türkiye is een bescheiden wijnland met oude wortels in Anatolië. Rond Ürgüp in Cappadocië en andere regio's past het klimaat goed bij druiventeelt. Al rond 2000 v.Chr. dreven de Hettieten in Anatolië wijnbouw, lang vóór Romeinen en Grieken. In de Ottomaanse tijd lag de wijnproductie circa vierhonderd jaar aan banden door een alcoholverbod. Alleen christelijke minderheden, onder meer Armeniërs en Grieken, mochten wijn maken en drinken. Toch telde Istanbul volgens een bericht uit 1637 al zo'n 160 tavernes en 6000 winkels met alcoholische dranken. Zie ook: Cappadocië.
Türkiye is a modest wine country with old roots in Anatolia. Around Ürgüp in Cappadocia and in other regions the climate suits grape growing. Around 2000 BCE the Hittites already grew vines in Anatolia, long before Romans and Greeks. In Ottoman times wine production was restricted for about four hundred years by an alcohol ban. Only Christian minorities, including Armenians and Greeks, were allowed to make and drink wine. Even so, a report from 1637 already counted some 160 taverns and 6,000 shops with alcoholic drinks in Istanbul. See also: Cappadocia.
