Georgia lies in the Caucasus and belongs to the oldest wine cultures in the world. Much wine still ages in buried qvevri jars. Known styles are amber wine, red wine from Saperavi and white wine from Rkatsiteli. Important regions are Kakheti, Kartli and Imereti. In Kakheti traditional making often puts the full chacha into the ferment. In western Georgia the Imereti method is more common, with at most a third of the chacha in the jar. Since 2013 Georgian qvevri winemaking is on the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage. See also: Qvevri, chacha, Imereti method and Georgian wine.
